Crowns and Bridges Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a small cap for a damaged, misshapen, or discolored tooth. Dental crowns are made from either metal, porcelain, or a combination of both materials. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are the most commonly used type because they offer both a natural appearance and durability.

Dr. Zahedi uses dental crowns for both restorative and cosmetic purposes. For example, if you’ve broken a tooth, have severe tooth decay, or have had an extensive root canal, Dr. Zahedi applies a crown to protect your tooth and provide additional strength and support. However, he also uses crowns to address cosmetic issues like unevenly shaped or sized teeth as well as teeth that have deep discoloration that doesn’t respond to topical whitening treatments.

What is a dental bridge?

Dr. Zahedi offers fixed dental bridges, a prosthetic dental device, to replace several adjacent missing teeth. A fixed dental bridge consists of a row of prosthetic teeth, also known as pontics, which is anchored in place to abutment teeth with crowns.

In addition to replacing missing teeth and restoring your smile, a fixed dental bridge:

  • Keeps your remaining natural teeth in place
  • Maintains your facial shape
  • Maintains your ability to chew and speak
  • Replaces old or removable dental bridges

Dental bridges are custom-made to fit your mouth precisely to replace your missing teeth and restore your smile.

How are crowns and bridges installed?

Dr. Zahedi needs at least two appointments to install crowns and bridges. To start the process for crowns and bridges fixed with crowns, he thoroughly numbs your teeth and the surrounding tissue before carefully removing a thin layer of tooth enamel from the teeth that will be fitted with crowns. This creates space for your crowns to rest against your other teeth.

Then, Dr. Zahedi takes impressions of your teeth and any gaps. He sends the molds to a dental lab where your crown and/or bridge are custom-made to fit your mouth exactly. Dr. Zahedi covers your teeth with temporary crowns to protect them while your permanent crowns are made.

When your crown or bridge is ready, Dr. Zahedi removes your temporary crown and fits your custom-made dental device onto your prepared tooth or teeth. He checks the fit and your bite before permanently fixing the crowns to your teeth.

Finally, he polishes the crown and/or bridge until it shines like natural teeth.
