Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

When you’re missing a tooth or teeth, a dental implant is a replacement tooth that is permanently fixed in your jaw. Unlike dentures and bridges, dental implants are not removable and do not require additional effort, such as overnight soaking or adhesive creams. They look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.

Dental implants consist of a titanium post, a dental crown or false tooth, and an abutment that attaches them. Depending on how many teeth you are missing, you can replace one, two, or all your teeth with implants. Dr. Zahedi may also use dental implants to anchor a bridge to your jaw.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

There are many benefits to choosing dental implants to replace your missing teeth, including:

  • Look and feel like normal teeth
  • Fixed in place and function like normal teeth
  • Easy to take care of with brushing and flossing
  • Improve speech
  • Easier to chew with, and, overall, improve eating
  • Improve oral health
  • Durable
  • Boost self-esteem
  • Permanent

The titanium post also acts as a natural tooth root, stimulating healthy bone growth in your jaw.

What is the implantation process?

Dr. Zahedi needs several appointments to install your dental implants. Your first appointment includes a consultation and examination of your jaw, gums, and any remaining natural teeth. Dr. Zahedi takes dental X-rays at this appointment to determine if your jaw is strong enough to support dental implants.

If you have bone loss in your jaw, Dr. Zahedi will need to perform a bone graft to strengthen your jaw so it can provide a secure foundation for your implants and any remaining natural teeth.

After Dr. Zahedi is satisfied that your jaw is strong enough, he begins your implantation process and installs the posts in your jaw.

Then, after your implant posts bond with your jaw and your gums heal, Dr. Zahedi takes molds of your jaw, posts, and any remaining teeth which are used to custom-make the abutments and crowns. Finally, Dr. Zahedi attaches your crowns, checks the fit and your bite, and polishes them until they shine like natural teeth.
